Bert-in up

When you're cited as a prime inspiration by both Jimmy Page and Johnny Marr, you're absolutely entitled to kick back and look proudly upon the kingdom of your influence. Bert Jansch did it up right pretty much his entire career. Here's a great tune that's on my mind as I prepare to head out of the hectic city to the swamplands of Louisiana for the weekend. A long weekend. So see you back on Wednesday.

Living in the past

Oh the endless buried treasures of the mid/late'60s. Some have places of origin that make you wish that earlier eras were possessed of today's incessant documentarian instincts. We The People were apparently a short-lived garage band from Orlando. Take a moment to imagine the uphill battle they faced in an environment like that. Try to picture the reactions of their fellow Central Floridians in the face of such wide-eyed forward-driving sounds. Sadly, their future belonged to Walt Disney.

You've got some Gaul

Oh, the effortless style of the French, at least the way I imagine them back in the early-to-mid '60s. The Franco-centric offerings on the 'blague have mostly centered on the lascivious and goofy detours from otherwise lascivious libertines (not counting Stereolab). I'm don't know enough about Chantal Goya to determine if she's any more wholesome, but this track at least sounds mostly disease-free.

Unsalted peanuts

You think you've got enough music from awesome blind piano players, do you? Well, friend, you do not. Valerie Capers was a sidewoman for several bebop and Afro-Cuban notables, but seemed to have had little of a headlining career for herself. Which is a shame, as today's tune should amply demonstrate. It makes me want to invent a new Peanuts gang character and go sledding in some cartoon snow. Who's with me?

Keep on the sunny side

Hello friends! Great to be back in town and back on the decks. Thanks much to Flynn for keeping the 'blague fires burning.

The Rambler/Dees tour was an exhausting and awesome exercise in burning the candle at both ends. Despite my blistered fingers and the head cold I seem to have picked up in Pittsburgh, it was a great time. Any tour that spans schools, libraries, weddings, dive bars, and the Clinton Presidential Library is bound to be something to remember.

Lots of driving means lots of car stereo fodder. And uncharacteristically, I was happy to defer to my compatriots for soundtracking. I'm glad I did because I got a much-needed
education in early rock and country. And some interesting variations like this.
